A Redtail P51 Visits Chanute Air Museum
I joined a small group bicycle ride up to Rantoul today (about 32 miles round trip). Highlight of the trip was a visit to the Chanute Aerospace Museum and a viewing of a restored P-51C “Redtail” flown by the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII. I thought about hauling my camera along, but decided to go with a little point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot so I could carry it in a shirt pocket – glad I did. It was a beautiful day for riding, starting in the 50s or 60s and probably around 70 on the way back. I may drive back up tomorrow and catch the Redtail in the air…you can take a 30 minute flight for only $2,000!
Also on display was a P40 Tiger owned by Rudy Frasca here in Champaign and, I think, a Navy trainer (2 passenger). Very cool to have then all there, lined up, and close enough to touch (although told not to). Here’s some pics.
